    Details

Mnuway Homestay lies on the north coast of Waigeo, about eight kilometres east Kabare.

Two private beach bungalows occupy an eastward facing cove opposite Pulau Boni. A freshwater stream emerges from the wildlife-rich jungle behind the homestay. Low tide reveals a wide, sandy beach.

Both bungalows sleep two on mattresses on the floor. Sheets, pillows blanket and mosquito nets are provided. Bungalow verandahs are equipped with table and chair settings.

Meals are served in Mnuway Homestay’s sand-floored dining room. Tea and coffee making supplies and drinking water are always freely available to guests there.

Guests share a 2 room bathroom building. One room has dip mandi (Bucket and ladle) bathing. The other houses a western-style toilet.

Electricity is supplied from generator and is available between sunset and about midnight.

Mnuway Homestay receives a strong 4G signal which supports a data connection if you have the right Telkomsel plan.

The nearest village is about a five minute boat ride away. Only basic supplies can be purchased in village shops. It would be best to bring all the supplies you consider essential with you.

Please do take any inorganic trash you create away with you when you leave, because there is no safe waste management infrastructure in Raja Ampat.

Very little English is spoken at Mnuway Homestay. Do bring a translation app or phrasebook.

    Transport / Getting there

By far the quickest, and most comfortable way to get to Mnuway Homestay is to fly from Sorong, via Waisai, to Kabare, and have Mnuway pick you up from there. (Note that Susi Air flights to Waisai/Kabare have a maximum of 15kg baggage allowance!)

If you want to do that, then do not select the Waisai pickup checkbox on Mnuway’s booking form.

Instead, contact Mnuway after booking to arrange your Kabare pickup. (Contact details will be provided in your booking confirmation email.)

Longboat transfers between Kabare and Mnuway Homestay cost IDR 500,000 for 1 or 2 people, or IDR 200,000 per person for 3 to 4 people. The trip usually takes about an hour.

You will also need to pay for a taxi transfer from Kabare airstrip to Kabare harbour. Mnuway will arrange this for you, but you will have to pay the taxi driver. The cost is IDR 200,000.

    Waisai transfers

Waisai transfers are available. Journey length depends on conditions, but usually takes around 4 to 5 hours.

Transfers are by longboat, 4 passengers maximum, and cost IDR 10,000,000 shared by passengers.

It’s a long way, and small boat travel in such remote and unpopulated areas is not without risk. Carrying an EPIRB or other satellite-based emergency communication device would be a sensible safety precaution.

To arrange a Waisai pickup, simply select the checkbox on Mnuway’s booking form.

    Sorong transfers

You would need to be very committed, (and very fit!) to consider the 6 to 7 hour longboat journey between Mnuway Homestay and Sorong.

Sorong transfers are also  by longboat, 4 passengers maximum, and cost IDR 12,000,000 shared by passengers.

Honestly, we don’t recommend this for anyone except committed adventurers. If you decide to do it, then carrying an EPIRB or other satellite-based emergency communication device would be a sensible safety precaution.

If you want to do it anyway, then do not select the Waisai pickup checkbox on Mnuway’s booking form.

Instead, contact Mnuway after booking to arrange your Sorong pickup. (Contact details will be provided in your booking confirmation email.)

Public boat from Sorong or Waisai

If you have plenty of time, and want to minimise costs, you might want to consider travelling to Kabare on the fortnightly supply vessel Sabuk Nusantara.

See this Google doc for info about the Sabuk Nusantara. (Thanks Yusril! 🙏)

    Activities

    Snorkelling

Bring snorkelling gear, because there’s lots of great snorkelling around Mnuway and the neighbouring islands.

Trips to nearby local snorkelling sites cost IDR 300,000.

All Mnuway Homestay trips are by longboat. The boat has a maximum capacity of four guests. Trip prices are shared by participants.

    Bird and wildlife observation

The jungles of Waigeo teem with birds and other wildlife. Mnuway Homestay can provide guides for jungle walks and bird watching.

    Surf Raja Ampat

Yes! It would be a major effort to bring a board there, but if you’re really keen, Mnuway is the first homestay on Stay Raja Ampat to offer surfing trips. IDR 500,000 (Shared, 4 pax max… Fewer, probably, if you bring a board.)

    Cultural visits

Mnuway means “old village” in the Biak language. The parents of Mnuway’s owner used to farm and fish in the old village of Warkori. Warkori’s population growth resulted in the establishment of the new village of Boni.

Mnuway Homestay can take you experience life in these, and any of the other local villages that you might like to visit.

You might be interested to visit the historical site of Bombedar, where the arrival of the Christian Gospel in northern Waigeo is commemorated. Bombedar visits cost IDR 500,000 (Shared, 4 pax max)

If you want to explore northern Waigeo’s largest settlement of Kabare (or just visit to get supplies unavailable in the smaller villages) the cost is IDR 800,000 (Shared, 4 pax max)

    Ayau day trip

Day trips to Ayau are available. The cost is IDR 5,800,000. The trip cost can be shared by up to 4 passengers.

    Wayag day trip

Mnuway Homestay can provide day trips to Wayag for IDR 12,000,000 The trip cost can be shared by up to 4 passengers.
