Details
Tanjung Karang homestay lies on Batanta’s southern shore, in a location well off the standard Raja Ampat tourism routes.
Tanjung Karang offers two very basic private bungalows. Like at eastern Batanta’s Ayem Homestay, guests should be prepared for an adventure experience much like all of Raja Ampat was back in 2011.
Both bungalows only sleep two, and bedding is mattresses on the floor. Mosquito nets, sheets, blankets and pillows are provided. Rooms have power outlets and light switches.
Meals are served in a landside dining room. Free drinking water and tea and coffee making supplies are always available there for guests.
Electricity is supplied by generator and is available from sunset to around midnight.
Only a weak and variable 4G signal is received at Tanjung Karang. Be prepared to be offline most of the time.
Hardly any English is spoken at the homestay, so, if you don’t speak Bahasa Indonesia, then bringing an offline translation app or phrasebook is recommended.
Wailebet village, is about 10 minutes away by boat. Be sure to stock up and bring anything you consider essential, because local villages only have basic supplies available.
Safe rubbish disposal is unavailable on any of the Raja Ampat islands, so if you want to avoid contributing to the trashing of paradise, please do take any inorganic waste you create away with you when you leave.
Transport / Getting there
It seems strange that a homestay so close to Sorong would not offer transfers to and from there. We are checking this and will update as soon as possible.
In the meantime, here are the transfer prices that have been provided by Tanjung Karang:
All transfers are by a longboat capable of carrying two guests and their luggage. Total transfer cost is per transfer, not per person.
Transfers to and from Waisai cost IDR 6,000,000
Transfers to and from Yensawai (where the Batanta cargo ferry docks) cost IDR 4,000,000
Transfers to Dayan Homestay cost IDR 6,000,000

Activities
Tanjung Karang is a great base from which to explore Batanta’s rainforested hills.
Cassowaries, blue monitor lizards and two species of birds of paradise are just a few of the many unique species you might encounter.
Bird of Paradise and waterfall tours
- Wilson’s Bird of Paradise tour: IDR 350,000 per person
- Red Bird of Paradise tour: IDR 350,000 per person
- Waterfall tour: IDR 350,000 per person
Batanta jungle trekking
Long jungle walks are possible along local paths. Asking your hosts for a guide is probably best the first time you do that, and sturdy footwear is recommended.
Wailebet village is about 1.5km away, and can be reached on foot in about 30 minutes. At low tide you can walk the coast to the village. When the tide is high, jungle trails are used.
Island visits
Tanjung Karang is a good base from which to explore some of the seldom visited smaller islands between Sorong and the homestay. It might be possible to combine such visits with a Sorong transfer. The islands of Doom, Soop and Yefman, for example, offer various historical and natural attractions.
Also ask your hosts about things to see at Salawati, the large island opposite the homestay. You’ll almost certainly be among the first tourists to many places there.
