Details

Dore Atri Homestay has a private bungalow overlooking the Dore Atri lagoon and a two room terrace bungalow with beach and ocean views.

The private bungalow has a sand floor throughout. The bedroom has a raised double bed with pillows, sheets and mosquito net and there is a small table and two chairs under the verandah roof. A western style toilet and bathroom facilities are housed in a nearby bathroom building.

The terrace bungalow is wooden floored and has a large verandah with a table, a bench seat and chairs. Both rooms are equipped with mattresses on the floor, sheets, pillows and mosquito nets and each room has its own private bathroom and western style toilet. Rooms also have shelves, mirrors, clothes hooks and power outlets and room light switches.

Meals are served on the bungalow verandahs and there are a number of lagoon and beachside seats provided for relaxing in the shade.

Solar electricity is used when the village supply is unavailable, and Dore Atri Homestay has a backup generator as well. There’s good phone reception at Yenbeser and several small shops for basic supplies. To avoid adding to Raja Ampat’s growing problem with inorganic rubbish, it’s best to always take any you reate away with you when you leave the islands.

You won’t have any problems conversing in English at Dore Atri – all family members have excellent English, although the boys can occasionally be too shy to use it.

Transport / Getting there

Transfers Between Dore Atri Homestay and Waisai are by speedboat and cost IDR 500,000 each way, with the cost shared between passengers.

Read more about Raja Ampat boat transport prices here.

Activities

Activities at Dore Atri are focused on introducing guests to Papuan culture and village life. It’s well worth starting your trip at Dore Atri to learn about Raja Ampat history and culture before heading out to an island hideaway where your questions may not be so easily answered. In addition to Pak Makusi and Ibu Nellie and their sons Isaac and William, you’ll be sharing the family home with Skippy the cat and his two underlings, the dogs Browny and Raswan.

Dore Atri lies at the easternmost end of Yenbeser village, next to the lagoon from which the homestay takes its name. There’s lots to explore around Yenbeser. Ask about the forest grove which still holds bamboo containers used long ago in rituals performed by Yenbeser’s doctor. There’s also wartime relics like the Kanji inscribed Japanese naval survey marker on Monkairi (Batu Lima), the remains of lost soldiers and caves that local people lived in during tiimes of battle in the islands.

The trees around the homestay are regularly visited by giant black palm cockatoos, and Birds of Paradise can be seen displaying a short distance away. In addition to a rich and varied bird life, the jungles around Dore Atri also shelter the iconic cuscus and a host of other mammals, reptiles and insects.

On the other side of the Dore Atri lagoon, a narrow, river-like inlet penetrates the island’s interior. The famed naturalist and explorer Alfred Wallace used this inlet to reach the island’s interior, where he camped while researching his theory of natural selection. Using descriptions from Wallace’s The Malay Archipelago, a recreation of his camp has been built on the site of his field station and there are also two Bird of Paradise display trees nearby. The boat journey into Dore Mkun alone makes a visit worthwhile.

Yenbeser’s long sandy beach is perfect for swimming and great snorkeling is to be had within a 10 minute ride (or swim!) of the homestay. Superb snorkeling can also be had at the nearby Friwen Island and Friwen Wall. Pak Makusi is an excellent and knowledgeable guide with a wealth of information to share and is able to organise snorkeling or sightseeing trips to any Raja Ampat attractions you might want to visit.

We stayed six days in Dore Atri and to us it was like paradise.
The cabin was very good, practically on the beach with two bedrooms and two bathrooms and a large terrace with view on the sea and jetty. The family (son and nephew of the owner, Martin Makusi) was very friendly and helpful and showed us the environment like Friwmun island, the authentic Papua kampong Kabui and a mangrovebush area. All with help of the boatsman, who was very skillful in steering the boat.
We have been snorkling at different places, all beautiful, like the Kabuibay, the sandbank but also near the jetty.
Three times a day we had our meals on the terrace of Martin Makusi’s house and he told us (in good English) a lot about the history, politics and habits of the Papua’s, which made our stay still more interesting. The meals were deliciously prepared by his wife and daughter in law.
We would recommend this place to anybody who wants to get away from everyday-lifestress and enjoy the beautiful nature of the Raja Ampat. Every day brought us something remarkable, like f.i. the kuskus.

  2. We stayed in this place for three night. Here me met an amazing and interesting men called Makussi. With him we learnt many things about the culture and history of raja ampat.

He and his family were very kind helping us arranging different trips and making us feel very comfortable in their house.

The trips that we made around friends and kabuy bay were awesome. We also did snorkel at different spots and we really enjoyed them.

Apart from that, the food is amazing and the bungalow too, located in a very relaxed and beautiful area with private lagoon where we could enjoy and rest.

Thanks for making our days unforgettable with you.

We highly recommend this place to everyone.

    Wish you all the best

We enjoyed the stay overall… this webpage is very out of date and needs updating. We booked the 700,000 pn room but were charged 900,000 when approaching Pak about it, it came to light that there were actually two new rooms with private bathroom (900,000pn) which are not advertised on here, Pak kindly however resolved the matter for us money wise.
Pak speaks very good English and has some very interesting stories to tell from his past in Papua New Guinea etc.
We were however a little disappointed which what little we actually learned culture wise about Raja Ampat and Papua, having read this is a good place to learn, we didn’t really learn all that much.
The food was delicious, and fruit or cake for snacks during the day which was lovely.
The snorkelling is very nice, and I would recommend asking about the eppaulette sharks, one of the family members will walk in the shallows with you at night with a torch and try to find them for you.
Highly recommend the Bird of Paradise tour.
The beach isn’t as nice a we had hoped, a fair amount of plastic along the beach and also a rotting shark head when we arrived (unsure why/how/what happened here… praying it was not caught!)
Lots of wildlife to be seen from the island, black palm cockatoos, lizards, geckos, kingfishers etc.
Again, the description about the dugongs is out of date, the do not visit, if so, very rarely nowadays with the boat traffic.

Nice place to start off in Raja Ampat

    • Thanks for the update Kelly :)

Not being based in Raja Ampat, we depend on guest feedback to let us know of changes like the ones you’ve mentioned. Those have obviously occurred since we were last at Dore Atri in January this year!

Dear Mr. Martin and Ibu Nelly:

Very very belatedly, I am writing to thank you again for your hospitality, arrangements for my snorkeling and boat tours for 4 nights on September, 2016.
I went to Medical room at Ambon airport to see festered scratch on my arm since then.
Unfortunately, I could not enjoyed snorkeling at Kei Island which is also famous for its long white beach, but Sandbank in Raja Ampat is non-comparable huge and beautiful than that. Limestone Island is the Best sandbank among that I Have ever seen in Okinawa Islands and Caribbean sea.

I am pleased to inform you that I made photo album and picture prints showing your Homestay unforgettable scenes and your people during my staying.
I will dispatch that by registered airmail to you next week.

When I visit to Raja Ampat again, I am looking forward to seeing Isaac and your new grand baby. And I hope I will be able to have more opportunities to get your lecture and talking time with you about Raja Ampat community.

    Best regards,

    Kei Fukamoto

My boyfriend and I stayed here for 3 nights in September 2016. We arrived without having contact with Pak Makusi because our phone was not working so we just asked the homestay we came from to bring us. When we arrived they immediately made a room ready. The rooms in the new bungalow are very luxurous compared to other homestays. You have your own bathroom with fresh water. Because the homestay is next to a village, you have a big jetty and a lot of children to enjoy. The people in the village are very kind.

Pak Makusi can you tell you everything. He knows so much! Also things about other parts of the world, things about the country you are from. It is a really nice man with a huge history. His wife is the best cook of Raja Ampat. She does a lot with chicken, so if you are one of these people that hate fish this might be a good bet ;) The food is very variated and always delicious. They have things you would not expect that they will have it so far away from Sorong.

As for tours, we only did one together with another couple. It was perfectly arranged. We did feel he really asks more money for a tour than you will be charged at other homestays. But if you want it to be perfect, this is the place!

I really recommend you to stay here. I don’t get why there are not so many reviews here on this website, I read the guestbook and there are people all the time and always very happy :)

A very small point to keep in mind: we were charged 450 per night/per person, instead of the 400 as mentioned above. We felt that, when you look at the bungalow and taste the food, this is a fair price. It is more expensive then others but they are outstanding on these 2 things.

  5. One the best places I have ever visited, going back and taking the kids. A wonderful spot and wonderful people, best ocean life you could ever see.

Yummy food, wonderful hospitality, authentic village, comfortable bungalows, great snorkelling trips (also to see Manta Rays). Really, I would highly recommend this place to anyone who appreciates this type of experience rather than staying at a resort. It was like a home away from home. Martin and Nelli are such lovely, sincere people who really go out of their way to make your stay wonderful! Thank you – and please do visit these lovely people and their homestay bungalows – you will not regret it. And the food – super yummy and healthy – the fish we had was to die for. Fyi, we stayed here for 5 days and 4 nights at the end of December, 2015.

I arrived in Dore Atri without reservation. The place was so wonderful that I decided to spend all my time in Raja Ampat in this homestay. The private bungalow is beautifully situated direct on a white sandy beach with a deep blue lagoon as your own private swimmingpool. The food is great and Pak Makusi and Aunt Nelly speak good English and have a lot to tell about Raja Ampat. Unless some other homestays Dore Atri is not isolated, it is situated in a beautiful and very relaxed authentic village, offering a unique chance to experience daily Raja Ampat life. That’s very different from homestays on for example Kri where there is no village and where there are only homestays and resorts full of tourist next to each other. Gam island is in the center of Raja Ampat, so it’ s a good starting point for excursions to other islands. For me Dore Atri was truly paradise!

First of all it was my first visit in Raja Ampat. I really enjoyed my time and stayed at Dore Arti homestay at Fam Island. The hut I stayed is very simple the bed is comfortable and it feel like I am in the nature. In the front it is a lagoon where you can swim and snorkel. Martin and Nelli were very good host and the foods were great. The village is small but the people are really friendly and it’s very clean.

we stayed one week at Dore Atri in November ’14 and loved every single moment of it!!! Martin and Nelly are really wonderful hosts: Martin’s knowledge of the island, of Raja Ampat and its history is a great bonus for travellers and his willingness to assist you with boat trips, snorkel tours and treks to spot the bird of paradise are great!!!while Nelly’s kindness and good cuisine( we still dream about her eggplants!!!) make your stay a real home from home. We want to thank them once again( even if so late… we’re sorry!!)and definitely advise travellers to spend a few days at their homestay

We arranged the whole trip through Pak Martin Makusi, the owner of the homestay. We stayed at Dore Atri for the first night and third night. We used the first room of the house with the bunk-bed inside and it was adequate for us. Pak Makusi and Ibu Nelly had been a great host during our stay. Ibu Nelly, helped by her niece Nona, made great food during our stay. The bungalow in the side next to the house might be too small. We liked to stay inside of the house. But they are building some additional bungalows in front of the house that could cater for more guests.

Thank you Pak Makusi and Ibu Nelly! It felt like we found a new family in Raja Ampat.

The homestay is also close to the Alfred Wallace campsite with beautiful view and serenity along the way to go there by boat.

The first homestay in Raja Ampat i visited and the worst so far. Very Expensive as you pay for staying in room that is worst condition than mexican prison. Our host even said that he is sleeping outside the house becouse is that bad… But it doesnt stoped him to charge as double the price we agreed at the phone. Only good thing was the food, we stayed just one night. Really bad impresion as this was the begining of our trip.

  10. Dear ibu Nelly and her family. Hello I am SONG from Korea with my little son.
