This form is for bookings only - you can not use it to check availability. Here is why Details
Rukem Weser Homestay is on the southwest shore of Birie Island which lies off the north coast of Batanta. The bungalow is over water in front of a belt of mangroves, behind which Birie’s virgin forest rises.
The two room bungalow sleeps four and has a real bed in one room and mattresses on the floor in the other. All bedding includes mosquito net, pillows, sheets, bolsters. The rooms open on to an enclosed common area which is equipped with a table and chairs and has power outlets available for charging devices.
Meals are served in Rukem Weser’s over water dining room which has great views across the bay that separates Birie Island from the neighbouring Pulau Arefi and Batanta. Drinking water, tea and coffee are always freely available in the dining room.
A boardwalk joins the bungalow and dining room to a toilet and bathroom shelter in the mangroves. A dip mandi bathroom and raised squat toilet are housed in separate rooms there. The boardwalk is being extended beyond the bathroom building to provide access to the forest behind the mangroves.
Electricity is provided at night by generator for lighting and charging devices.
There’s no phone reception at Rukem Weser Homestay and very little English is spoken by the owners, so bringing a phrasebook would be best if you have no Bahasa Indonesia.
Basic supplies are available at the village of Arefi which is about a fifteen minute boat ride away. Be sure to bring anything you absolutely can’t do without with you though. Please also be sure to take away any inorganic rubbish you create because,
as with the rest of Raja Ampat, there’s no safe waste disposal available on Birie and inorganic waste left there will inevitably result in pollution. Transport / Getting there
Wildlife observation and relaxation in a pristine environment are the main attractions at Rukem Weser Homestay. The lush forests of Pulau Birie are a birdwatcher’s paradise and the waters between the homestay and Pulau Arefi are home to a large group of dugongs. There are corals and rich marine life in the waters of the homestay, but visibility in the straits between the islands is not as fine as that of the open ocean. A short boat ride will bring you to the northern shores of Birie though, where fantastic snorkelling (bring your own gear) over coral can be found.
There are also a number of beautiful, uninhabited small beaches nearby – perfect places to while away the day with a picnic lunch. The nearby village of Arefi is also extremely picturesque and well worth visiting.
Batanta is one of only two places in the world where you can see Wilson’s Bird of Paradise: Rukem Weser Homestay can take you to see this amazing bird and can also arrange tours to any other local areas of interest. The table below lists some of the available options. Tours are by longboat capable of carrying up to 6 people and the trip cost is shared by passengers.
