    Details

Yengkawe Birdwatching Homestay sits next to the mouth of a jungled ravine on the southern coast of Waigeo at the entrance to Kabui Bay.

Two private, over-water bungalows, and a 2-room family bungalow are available. (Rooms in the family bungalow are rented separately, so if you want the whole bungalow, request 2 x “Room in a bungalow” on the booking form.)

Private bungalows have raised beds, while the family bungalow rooms have mattresses on the floor. Sheets, pillows, bolsters and mosquito nets are supplied in all rooms.

Bath towels, power outlets and room light switches are provided in all rooms.

Meals are served in an over-water dining room. Free drinking water, tea and coffee are always available to guests there.

Bathroom and toilet facilities are housed in a separate building and are shared by all guests. The toilet is western pedestal style. A separate dip mandi bathroom is located next to it. The bathroom building is on land, and is accessed by a boardwalk.

There’s a strong mobile phone signal at Yengkawe Homestay and a (slow) data connection is usually possible. Electricity for lighting and charging devices is available 24/7.

Basic supplies can be purchased at Saporkren village, which is only a few minutes away by boat. Its also possible to walk to Saporkren via a jungle path (about 30 minutes.) Like everywhere else in Raja Ampat, there’s no safe way to dispose of inorganic waste at Yengkawe, so it’s best to take all yours away with you when you leave to avoid the possibility of further rubbishing paradise.

Some Yengkawe staff can speak basic English, but it would be a good idea to bring a phrasebook if you don’t speak Bahasa Indonesia.

    Transport / Getting there

Wasai transfers are by speedboat and cost IDR 500,000 each way. The boat used can carry 4 guests, and trip cost is shared by passengers.

    Activities

Yengkawe Birdwatching Homestay’s little secret bay is a great quiet hideaway. A tiny arc of powder-soft white sand beach lies at the mouth of a jungled limestone gorge, with views across clear turquoise water to Gam Island.

There’s good snorkeling in the waters around the homestay and dolphins pass close by the homestay every day between 10am and noon as they patrol Kabui Bay.

As suggested by Yengkawe’s name, birdlife abounds in the jungle surrounding the homestay and there’s a path to a hilltop viewpoint for panoramic views across Kabui Bay, Gam and Urai Islands. A guided trek to the viewpoint costs IDR 100,000 per person. You can also hike through the jungle to Saporkren, where you can experience village life, refresh yourself in the freshwater springs on the beach and get in a little more snorkelling.

    Kayak rental

February 2024 update: Yengkawe no longer has kayaks available for rental.
